The Sustainability Council creates and supports an environment of sustainable practices for students, faculty/staff and NMSU stakeholders. This volunteer council is committed to education, research, operations and engagement that build an economically, ecologically and socially sustainable campus and community.
Working committees are responsible for developing action plans for sustainability initiatives and completing the STARS (Sustainability Tracking Assessment Reporting System) report. Monthly meetings have guest speakers to educate the community about various topics on climate change and sustainability initiatives on campus.
We ask for nominations and search for volunteers; then the current members vote.
Committee chairs are appointed by the Leadership Team and Council Chair (2-year commitment with opportunity to continue with terms of 1 year). Committee co-chairs are appointed by Leadership Team and Council Chair (2-year commitment with opportunity to continue with terms of 1 year; it is encouraged that committee co-chair position be filled by students to facilitate student input and provide leadership training opportunities).
The Office of Sustainability is the main supporting office for the Sustainability Council.
Term for the chair of the Council and chair of the Planning, Administration and Engagement committee is two years, elected in even numbered years. Term for the chair of the Operations committee and the Education and Research committee is two years, elected in odd numbered years. Elections are held November of every year.
Many people want to volunteer again to chair a committee. It is completely voluntary to be reappointed.

Completed the AASHE STARS (Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education, Sustainability Tracking Assessment Rating System) report and achieved Gold rating; summer meetings were tours of sustainable sites on main campus; six guest speakers; gave green student clubs the opportunity to share what they are doing and try to get more members to join; continued to support "Greening the Curriculum" program to get three sustainability minors at NMSU.
