Purpose:

The Faculty Senate plays a role in shared governance of the university. 

Authority:

Legislative jurisdiction over policies affecting the university's academic mission.

Chair: Julia Parra / Term ends the last day of Spring 2022 semester.

Incoming Chair / Term Begins: Gaylene Fasenko / Term begins the first day following the end of the Spring 2022 semester.

Process for selecting chair: The Faculty Senate elects two (2) nominees for the position of chair at the December meeting, one who can be the current Faculty Senate Chair. Nominees must be current elected members of the senate at the time of nomination. Within 60 days a secure electronic ballot is created and all faculty, as defined in Article I, are notified of the election dates, when voting opens and closes.

In the 2021-22 academic year, the Faculty Senate considered 18 propositions, including a number of issues critical to the university system's success. Among the issues the NMSU Faculty Senate addressed as related to Leads 2025 are:

01-21/22: Proposal to Amend Administration Policy Rule 4.61 Transfer Credit for Prior Learning
02-21/22: Revision to the Constitution of the Faculty Senate of New Mexico State University to account for the creation of the College of Health, Education, and Social Transformation

Leads Goal 4 - Establish a Robust University System
03-21/22: Resolution for the Reestablishment of an Open Faculty Communication Forum (Faculty Talk)
04-21/22: A Resolution of No-Confidence in the President and Provost of New Mexico State University
06-21/22: Family Friendly Employer - Aligning NMSU and Las Cruces Public Schools Spring Breaks
07-21/22: Proposition to establish part-time/temporary faculty representation on the faculty senate, including changes to the Faculty Senate Constitution
